Licenciatura em Engenharia Química, Tecnologia e Indústria, Instituto Superior Técnico (1989). Doutoramento em Engenharia Química, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (A.M.P. Simões, 1995).

A actividade científica de Fátima Montemor tem vindo a ser desenvolvida no centro de investigação ICEMS (www.icems.ist.utl.pt). Desde Junho de 2000 que é investigadora auxiliar do Departamento de Engenharia Química e Biológica. Os seus interesses científicos centram-se no desenvolvimento de metodologias de funcionalização de superfícies e desenvolvimento de estratégias para promover a durabilidade de materiais metálicos e poliméricos. Salientam-se novos revestimentos funcionais para materiais utilizados na indústria automóvel e aeronáutica, nomeadamente o desenvolvimento de revestimentos auto-reparáveis (self-healing coatings). Os seus interesses incluem o desenvolvimento de revestimentos para aumentar a durabilidade de materiais utilizados em várias aplicações tecnológicas, incluindo a indústria dos transportes e da construção, sistemas de produção de energia e aplicações biomédicas.  

Actualmente é responsável pelo sistema de espectroscopia de AES/XPS  do ICEMS/IST.

Actualmente é Directora Adjunta para as relações Internacionais do Instituto Superior Técnico

É também membro do Conselho Editorial das revistas internacionais: Cement and Concrete Composites and of the Journal Surface and Coatings technology, ambas publicadas pela Elsevier.
